Automakers are getting increasingly creative with their marketing campaigns. Recently, Honda engaged in a full-out Twitter war with various snack-makers. The company used the social media platform to generate awareness about one of its innovative features found on a favorite model here in our Westport, CT showroom.
Many are already aware of the HondaVac -- a built in vacuum cleaner available on the new Honda Odyssey. To demonstrate the capabilities of the hose that can stretch to clean every nook and cranny of the vehicle, Honda invaded the twitter accounts of popular snack food brands and put them "on notice."
Doritos, Oreo, Taco Bell and Chips Ahoy were amongst those put on trial. The campaign generated a nice buzz and response from the Twitter community. Oreo replied with a challenge for the Odyssey vac: could it handle its Mega Stuf cookie? Nature Valley showed its sense of humor by referring to the campaign as a "crumby joke." Hellman's made the claim that any sandwich slathered with their product would be too tasty to leave as much as a crumb behind.
Overall, Honda would consider the effort a success with 10.6 million impressions made, significantly higher than the 500,000 seen on an average day.
